Laghetti Vermiglio / Ossana / Valpiana / Laghetti Vermiglio

This fascinating tour runs on the many different kinds of ground of the northern side of the torrent Vermigliana. The presence of the brown bear has been attested here since the ancient times. He was attracted into these shady woods by the presence of flocks and herds. During this itinerary you can also see and visit the medieval castle of Ossana, the verdant Val Piana and, if you make a brief diversion, the so-called 'masi' of Palù, which are typical farmhouses.

Track description

From the little lakes of St. Leonardo cross the torrent Vermigliana and continue downhill on its right side. Led by the fascinating medieval tower of the castle of Ossana, climb through the village, go past the church of St. Vigilio and take the road to the beautiful Val Piana. By the aedicula of St. Antonio turn to the right and follow the indications to the Dal Doss hut. 300 mt. before the hut, just before a switchback, leave the forest track and turn to the right onto a difficult trail for about 100 mt., which takes you to the forest road of Barco. Go uphill its length and take the sometime marshy trail that crosses the torrent Barco – through a little wooden bridge – for 700 mt. Turn right and get to the forest track Palù-Barco: from here on a long descent leads to the Volpaia huts, after passing past the junction to the Palù huts and Solcar. Proceed on the road alongside the meadows and return to the little lakes of Vermiglio.
